Gurkha Welfare Trust

We ensure that Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity.
We achieve this primarily through the provision of financial, medical and community aid in Nepal.
We operate through 21 Area Welfare Centres spread across traditional Gurkha recruiting areas.
In the UK, in conjunction with other service charities and government bodies we offer advice and support to help the thousands of retired Gurkhas and their families who choose to settle here.
In the late 1960s, following the end of various Eastern conflicts, there was a significant reduction in the number of serving Gurkhas in the British Army.
It was realised that many Gurkha soldiers and their dependants or widows in Nepal faced destitution in old age. Many of these soldiers had served in the World Wars. However, they had not served the 15 years needed to qualify for an Army pension.
Unlike their British counterparts who could rely on the welfare state in old age, the Nepali Gurkhas had no such safety net.

RFEA understands the challenges faced when transitioning into civilian employment. We exist to provide life-long, life-changing support, jobs and training opportunities to Service leavers, reservists, veterans and their families, irrespective of circumstances, rank, length of service, or reason for leaving. We provide life-long support to ex-Forces personnel including Early Service Leavers through to older veterans who have spent the majority of their working life in the military.
Many of our team are also veterans and military spouses, meaning we understand your unique experiences and the skills and expertise these experiences can offer employers. When clients speak to our advisors, they are talking to people who can relate to them and both empathise and empower.

We also increasingly work with families, veterans in the criminal justice system, wounded, injured and sick Service leavers and more through an unrivalled range of programmes and practical tools all tailored to each individual.
